A Silence in Heaven

Diana Marlowe is a British beauty whose heart has already been broken once; it doesn't take her long to size up Mark Courtney. She knows the cocky, self-centered young politician from Liberty, Georgia, plans to use the exploding world war to boost his own political plans. Still there is something- and unwelcomed tenderness that draws Diana to the scheming young flyer and stirs a forgotten fire in her heart. Only one other person sees through Mark's facade: his commanding officer "Killer" Kane, who labels Courtney a coward and assigns an inexperienced bunch of misfits to Courtney's crew on the B-17 bomber Outcast. Together they endure daily life-and-death missions to hell until that moment when the sky suddenly explodes into bright orange and time seems to have lost its meaning.
