Oceanology purports to be the true account of a voyage of discovery beneath the waves, undertaken by a Captain Nemo in his submarine the Nautilus in 1866. Accompanied by a crew that included a number of scientists, naturalists and artists, the objective of the expedition was to circumnavigate the globe, exploring the world's great oceans to uncover their many mysteries. The book was compiled by de Lesseps, a 16 year-old assistant to Nemo's marine biologist Professor Pierre Aronnax. He was the only member of the expedition to return alive, some three years later. His next position of employment was as an assistant to the fledgling writer Jules Gabriel Verne in Paris but ill-health, which had dogged de Lesseps since his return from the voyage, caused him to be admitted to a sanatorium in 1869. He died that same year.
